Personal Shopping Etiquette Tips
A private shopping day in New York should feel relaxed, enjoyable, and just a little bit special. These simple tips are here to help make the experience smoother for you, your guide, and the small boutiques we visit together.
Most of it comes down to common courtesy and a bit of awareness — the same things that make shopping more pleasant for everyone.
-
Come with an open mind and a realistic budget range (even a loose one helps).
-
Wear comfortable shoes and clothes that are easy to change in and out of.
-
Bring a small bag or backpack rather than something bulky.
During the Shopping Experience
-
Be honest about what you like and don’t like — it helps your guide work faster and smarter for you.
-
Try things on when suggested. Fit and feel matter more than how something looks on a hanger.
-
Please let your guide know if you have a firm end time so she can keep track — but don’t hesitate to linger when something special catches your eye.
With Your Guide
-
Trust the process. Your guide knows the stores and how to move efficiently through the city.
-
It’s okay to say “this isn’t for me” — no need to over-explain or apologize.
-
Ask questions. Good personal shopping is collaborative.
In the Stores
-
Handle items carefully, especially vintage and delicate pieces.
-
Keep clothing on the hangers while trying things on, and avoid throwing items on the floor in the dressing room.
-
Put things back where you found them (or hand them to staff) if you’re not buying.
-
Please refrain from eating or drinking inside the stores. You’ll want both hands free to shop, and it prevents damaging the fabrics.
-
Carry backpacks or large bags at your side rather than on your back while inside stores — it helps keep the aisles clear and avoids accidentally bumping into other shoppers.
-
When shopping in New York’s boutiques, your behavior toward the shop owner often influences the quality of service you receive. Many small stores are owned and operated by the designer or artist themselves. Treat them with respect, and they will likely return it. Because the salesperson and the owner are frequently the same person, they genuinely care about your experience and want you to be happy with their pieces. They are not focused on getting rich quickly — they love what they do and take pride in doing it well.
Afterward
-
Take the time you need, while remaining aware of other shoppers around you — especially during busier moments.
-
If you’re on the fence about something, it’s usually better to leave it than force a maybe.
Before the Day
Returns
When shopping in boutiques, returns are generally discouraged unless there is a clear issue with the item — for example, if it is torn, fades after the first wash, or splits at the seams.
One of the benefits of buying from a boutique is that you are not rushed and have time to make a thoughtful decision. For this reason, I discourage returns based solely on “I don’t like it.” These are hardworking entrepreneurs who cover all their own costs and overhead. They rely on the integrity of each sale and have worked with you to help ensure you are making the right choice.
If you feel hesitant about a purchase, be upfront with the shop owner and ask about their return or exchange policy before buying.
